The renowned publisher has secured Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to lead the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Follows Lukewarm Reception
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing unveiling last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure informed employees about this decision through an internal memo, which stressed that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a distinct direction.
The president expressed that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a revised vision, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Acquisitions
This announcement echoes a comparable step taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the complete text from the president's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a update, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most motivated and talented developers we have had the chance to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to endure.”
Through your commitment and adaptability, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was revealing. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had refinements needed. It highlighted the necessity for a sharper brand.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve advanced. You took the feedback to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed goal - one that’s ready to achieve its potential to our players.
The trust in this project increases every day. To further the remarkable progress you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of the team. Following a period of conversations, Ben starts with us on the specified date.
Ben’s guidance and background in the PVP shooter genre is vast, having dedicated the last 15 years developing and leading some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to persist witnessing the progress of the game in the time to follow.
The President

Title Details and Vision
Project Ethos was announced in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. Then, 31st Union portrayed the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to match your preferred approach," the description explains. "Take on the rivals with fresh skills, challenges, and obstacles that evolve every match. Will you leave securely with your valuable rewards? Alternatively take a risk, risk it all, and pray your group can earn top ranking? The choice is in your hands."
The game does not have an confirmed launch window or supported systems, but enthusiasts can anticipate additional details as development advances.
