The Senate on Tuesday passed without delay to legislation that will force the release of investigative files related to the deceased pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the House of Representatives and a shift by Donald Trump and his GOP allies. Trump's team relented after an extended period of trying to block the bipartisan effort involving a case that has dogged the president since his return to the White House.
Expedited Passage in Congress
The Senate acted by consensus, which needs acceptance from each senator but avoids a recorded vote, speeding up the process. Just before, the House passed by a huge margin the bill on a massive majority.
Citizens have been patient long enough. Jeffrey Epstein’s victims have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer stated in a Senate remarks on Tuesday, before asking the Senate to pass it unanimously. “Uncover the facts. Ensure full disclosure.”
Future Action
The measure next will be sent to the president for his approval. Trump signaled on Monday that he would endorse the legislation.
Even though Trump has for an extended period dismissed the controversy over the government’s handling of the scandal as a “false narrative”, he signalled his support for the measure over the past few days, and announced he would give his assent if it is presented to him.
Reaction
Democrats, along with victims and their representatives who were present in a public section, cheered after the bill was passed. The only opposition came from Clay Higgins, who stated he feared the measure would make public identifying details of witnesses, potential suspects and others caught up in the investigation.
