A recent study reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among women compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
